Tvam's future plans for Didsari and nearby villages of Uttarkashi

20th November 2014, Tvam after an year long struggle with government and bureaucrats was finally able to install a motorized trolley for the villagers of Didsari and now we want to do more for these people by making them more self sustained and empowered. Tvam is holding a series of discussion with like minded professionals and experts drafting a bigger plan* for the villages of Uttarkashi region and Didsari. Here are few excerpts from the plan -

As a next step towards developing the region, Tvam wants to raise demand for a primary health care center inside the village.  We also want to raise demand for proper roads and connectivity for the villagers. The needs of these villages are very basic- medical facilities, protection for their farms from wild animals, dams and safety walls to prevent landslides etc. We do not see any reason as to why these needs cannot be met.

To address the major issue of unemployment in the villages, we have already formed a group with the locals and have already seen a market for their home grown products. Tvam is encouraging the villagers to believe in their potential of farming and cultivation of pulses (aka dal), milk, fruits, mushrooms, etc. We want these amazing products from the hills to reach their buyer without too many mediators so that the villagers get proper due for their hard work. By doing so, we want to stop migration of these people from their native places by providing them numerous work opportunities at home.

Usually migration of people from villages due to lesser job and earning options increases the population density of cities and is a threat to the ecological system of the magnificent Himalayas. Unlike, the popular belief that these people maybe a threat to the sensitive ecological region; the fact is on the contrary. Hence, we want to help these people by generating more options for living in their own villages and eventually help them and their village.
